To add further drama, I reduced the number of colors I was witnessing to green granite rocks, black shadows, and a cream-colored sky. We could see in the distance Bear Island Light perched precipitously on a cliff overlooking Northeast Harbor and the other Cranberry Islands. Bear Island Light is a private residence and not open to the public, even though it is located in Acadia National Park. But, the best views are from the water anyway. I asked Captain Rick to shut the engines off and the only sound was the water clapping on the side of vessel. The evening sun intensified the colors and gloriously revealed more characteristics of the lighthouse and surrounding hills. I felt fortunate to obtain permission to visit the grounds some 80 years later. Today the Victorian house is a private residence, and the tower is under the care of the American Lighthouse Foundation. Much has changed since Hopper’s time. The house has been extensively remodeled and the once-barren hillside is now layered with fine homes. Still, it was easy to be taken back to Hopper’s time as I sketched and photographed this classic lighthouse in the morning light. The tower and house dominates my composition so I have kept the sky simple, but I have detailed the low-tide rocks of Casco Bay and distant Cushing Island that provided the depth I was seeking. I frequently go to this place for solitude and to collect my thoughts. One can come and watch waves pound the granite shore, see a Fresnel lens up close and think about what daily life was like back then. After many visits and sketches throughout the year I finally found the right composition on a breezy and icy ten-degree January morning. It was so cold that the windows of the cast iron lantern room had crystallized, forming a light haze. Despite the cold I took several photos that helped with my design. As I drew the illustration, I bypassed details such as wires\/cables and smaller stones but enhanced the rubble stone texture of the tower with bright light and deeper shadows.
